Cute Neighborhoods to Explore in the Silicon Valley

Wednesday, November 18, 2015

Living in the Silicon Valley can be quite different from San Francisco. The south bay population is more spread out and is home to some of the larger tech companies such as Google, Apple, and Facebook. As it is more spread it out and more family-oriented, the abundance of clubs, bars, and nightlife is far from what exists in San Francisco. However don’t let the quietness of the south bay stop you from exploring it!

The south bay is home to several cute historical towns and neighborhoods. Whether you are looking for a day trip or a nice afternoon, try exploring these Silicon Valley neighborhoods for some coffee, a few pints of beer, or shopping in one-of-a-kind boutique stores.

Willow Glen

Located on the southern part of San Jose, Willow Glen boasts a downtown filled with coffee shops, restaurants, and boutique stores. The neighborhood is located on Lincoln Street, smacked in between Lincoln and Minnesota Ave going up to Broadway Ave. This cozy neighborhood is a great place to spend the afternoon or come with friends to enjoy some of their local events! Throughout the year you can find local, charming events such as the Wine Walk or Founders' Day Parade.

Things to Do: Wine Walk, Dancin’ on the Avenue

Campbell

Downtown Campbell is another small neighborhood with several cafes, bars, restaurants, and shops. The downtown area is located on E Campbell Ave between Railway Ave and S 4th Street. There are smaller side streets with additional shops and eateries. Despite this neighborhood being cozy, there is surprisingly a good amount of nightlife with packed restaurants, bars, and lounges during weekends. Whether you’re bringing a date over to Campbell or perhaps some friends to hit the bars, you won’t be disappointed!

There is a year-round, holiday-like feel in Campbell when strolling through the streets at night past the trees lined in glowing Christmas lights. I recommend sitting out on a restaurant patio over dinner during the warm summer nights. Many restaurants have an open layout with relatively large outdoor patios for diners. As it is in California, winters aren't too bad either!

Where to Eat: Naschmarkt, Opa, Mo’s
Bars to Try: Aqui Cal-Mex, Katie Blooms, Campbell Brewing Company

Historic Saratoga Village

Similar to Willow Glen and Campbell, Historic Saratoga Village offers a cozy, relaxed feel. Most of the shops and attractions can be found on Big Basin Way between 6th Street reaching all the way to Saratoga Los Gatos Road.

What sets Saratoga apart from the others is its proximity to the Santa Cruz Mountains, which hosts many wineries. There are at least 2 tasting rooms in this neighborhood to try out some local wines. In fact, you'll probably see signs for wineries everywhere you walk/drive so take advantage of the wine scene in this small town nestled at the foot of the mountains! You won't find this in Napa Valley!

Castro Street

If cozy and comfortable isn’t your thing, then give Castro Street in Mountain View a try. Located near several companies and startups northward of San Jose, Castro Street can be packed during the evenings or weekends. There are 2 Irish pubs and a German bar to keep the brews flowing. This neighborhood is centered on Castro Street between Mercy Street and W Evelyn Avenue.

Of course for an easier, lazy type of weekend, duck into a cafe such as Red Rock Coffee and enjoy the day with a book over a latte and slice of cake. There are also several boutique shops and a bookshop to explore.
