One major stop on my European trip was one of the Canary
Islands, Fuerteventura. Although it’s owned by Spain, the island is actually
located of the coast of the northern part of Africa, giving it a very interesting
terrain. The island was formed due to volcanic eruptions, which created the
land. The volcanic eruptions along with a lack of water inside the island makes
the land mostly desert. However as it is an island, there is a plethora of
beaches and sand dunes created from sands carried over from the nearby
continent.
I’m not going to lie, my first impressions upon landing and leaving the airport were grim. It looked like the moon. Lifeless, dry, bleak. I had no idea what to expect from this trip since we drove for 20 minutes in what looked like barren desert completely void of life. Not even a cactus in sight.
Upon arriving at our resort, everything started to look
livelier. We stayed at the Sheraton resort right on the beach and it could not
have been a better decision. The resort is very colorful and set up with rooms
facing the Atlantic Ocean. There were multiple pools, a spa, bar with ocean
view balconies, and a refreshing lobby full of bright tropical plants. While checking in, the bellboy popped a bottle
of champagne for our family and prepared a table of snacks (now talk about service!). We booked junior
suites for the duration of our stay, which came with private balconies leading
to the pool, a ton of space, walk in closet, and a private whirlpool. Life
could not be better as we indulged in relaxing at the spa, walking along the
beach (right outside the resort), and relaxing by the pool.
The resort is also conveniently located next to a casino, a
handful of other resorts, and a shopping mall complete with grocery store. There
is also a golf resort across the street where I took golf lessons (more on that
later). Beyond the neighborhood of resorts nearby, everything was not reachable
without a car so I highly recommend renting one.
If considering travel to Fuerteventura, I highly
recommend coming towards the beginning or tail end of the high summer season.
We arrived in mid-September (the tail end of travel season) and it was great to
mostly have the resort to ourselves. There were always seats by the pool, no
waiting times for the restaurants, less screaming children, and in general is
less chaotic.
