Tullamore, Ireland: Tullamore Dew Distillery Tour

Tuesday, December 29, 2015

It shouldn’t be too much of a surprise that I stopped at the Tullamore Dew distillery on my trip. I mean it is alcohol. Who can refuse that? And the chance to learn about making alcohol? I can’t pass that one up at all!

The Tullamore Dew distillery is located in the town of Tullamore, Ireland. The town itself is quite small but quaint and not too heavily trafficked during my time there in the winter. One big attraction in town is the distillery, which offers tours every day and year-round. This distillery was on the smaller side compared to the Jameson distillery and Guinness Storehouse but does offer a whiskey tasting tour, restaurant, and bar.

The tour is guided with someone who shows guests around the distillery and describes the process of making Tullamore Dew whiskey. Visitors are shuffled from room to room, which displays the materials or machinery used in making the fine liquor. I found our guide to be very knowledgeable about whiskeys and ingredients going into the whiskey in general. I was relieved that Tullamore Dew is wheat free (for those who are unaware, I have a wheat sensitivity). The only grains used are corn and barley.

Finally, upon reaching the tasting room, visitors get to sample 3 types of Tullamore Dew whiskeys. We had a Tullamore Dew original, Old Bonded Warehouse Release, and Single Malt whiskey to try. The guide had us take a swig, let it rest in our mouth, and then gulp it down to really taste the subtleties. We briefly discussed what flavors we tasted as we went through each whiskey, with each one becoming smoother than the next.

Lastly, we were let loose to explore the gift shop. The distillery sold a warehouse release, which can only be bought in the Tullamore Dew distillery (middle bottle on the image above). There was also a seasonal Tullamore Dew with a cider cask finish, giving this whiskey hints of apple. I couldn’t resist and purchased a bottle of each as gifts for friends. Who wouldn’t love whiskey for the holidays?!
